Providence, RI- Providence College has announced the appointment of Rhode Island State Police Major John J. Leyden, Jr. as the Executive Director of the College's Office of Safety and Security. Major Leyden has elected to retire eight months prior to his mandatory retirement date, following 24 years of distinguished service with the Rhode Island State Police. He begins his position at Providence College on October 27.

Major Leyden served most recently as Field Operations Officer - second in command to the Colonel of the RI State Police - responsible for assisting in the planning, coordinating, and directing of all line functions for the Division of State Police. He also served as media spokesperson for the Division.

During his career with the State Police, which included positions in the Detective Bureau's Intelligence Unit, as Assistant Patrol Commander, Night Executive Officer, District Commander of the Uniformed Bureau and Inspector in the Professional Standards Unit, he was awarded 24 Departmental Commendations for outstanding police work.

A graduate of Roger Williams University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, Major Leyden earned his master's degree in administration of justice from Salve Regina University.
As Executive Director of the Office of Safety and Security, Major Leyden will supervise a staff of more than 40 full-time security officers responsible for protecting the lives and property of all members of the campus community.

"We're very pleased that Major Leyden has accepted this position at Providence College. Throughout his exemplary career with the State Police he has demonstrated great professionalism and dedication," said Father Stuart McPhail, O.P., the College's vice president for Student Services. "He is knowledgeable, energetic and keenly focused on using his skills and expertise to enhance our campus community."

Major Leyden, who was raised in the Elmhurst neighborhood surrounding Providence College, notes, "I grew up literally across the street from Providence College. I have always had high regard for the College and its mission. The opportunity to oversee the safety and security operations on PC's campus is one I wholeheartedly embrace as I continue my career in public safety."
