Dr. Joseph P. Cammarano is First Recipient of Providence College's First Faculty Teaching Award

Providence, RI- Rumford resident Dr. Joseph P. Cammarano, assistant professor of political science at Providence College, was recently presented with the first Joseph R. Accinno Faculty Teaching Award by College President Rev. Philip A. Smith, O.P. during the fall  Academic Convocation.

The selection process included reviews of portfolios submitted by nominees; classroom assessment, during which students were asked their impressions of a faculty member's particular course; and observations of the finalists in the classroom setting. The award includes a cash stipend and a decorative clock.

A New Jersey native, Cammarano received his bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from Rutgers University and has been teaching full time since 1989. Prior to coming to PC in 1997, he taught in the Maxwell School of Public Affairs and Citizenship at Syracuse University for six years. His research interests include presidential politics, political socialization and psychology, gender and politics, and citizenship.

A respected teacher and scholar, Cammarano's involvement in the College community extends well beyond the classroom. He has taught in the Feinstein Institute for Public Service's public and community service program and participated in service work affiliated with the institute. He has served on the Academic Affairs Committee of the Providence College Board of Trustees and on the planning team charged with the development of a code of academic integrity.  He also assists various initiatives of the Center for Teaching Excellence, the Balfour Center for Multicultural Affairs, and the Student Congress.
