Chiu joins institutional advancement’s senior management team

Edward Chiu, an accomplished advancement professional with nearly 10 years’ experience in higher-education leadership positions, has begun his duties as the College’s new associate vice president for institutional advancement.

Chiu, who served for the last three years as the director of operations for institutional advancement at St. John’s University, was appointed in November by David C. Wegrzyn, vice president for institutional advancement. He is the second senior management team member to be named by Wegrzyn, who appointed longtime institutional advancement veteran Robert Ferreira ’83 to serve as assistant vice president for alumni relations in October.

Chiu will be responsible for running the day-to-day operations of the Office of the Vice President for Institutional Advancement. He will direct the office’s outreach efforts in alumni relations and development. More specifically, he will work closely with Wegrzyn and Ferreira "to lessen the tuition burden on the College’s students," according to Wegrzyn.

Citing Chiu’s experience at both Catholic and state universities, Wegrzyn said he will "rely on him for his strategic vision and his ability to assist me in attracting and training top-notch talent."

Chiu, who has a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Connecticut, said he has already developed a comfort level with PC.

"This is a close-knit, family-oriented community," he noted. "PC is a wonderful opportunity for me. I have great respect for Father Shanley’s [College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P.] leadership and vision."

Before coming to PC, Chiu served at St. John’s for eight years. The Long Island, N.Y., native began as associate director and then became director of the Office of Alumni Relations. He was promoted to director of operations for institutional advancement in August 2003.

In that role, he guided all advancement functions, including alumni relations, advancement services, the Annual Fund, athletic development, communications, and planned giving. He directed the daily operations of the division and oversaw an annual operating budget of $8 million. He also assisted in the successful execution of a $250 million capital campaign.

Earlier in his career, Chiu served in leadership positions with UConn’s alumni association.
