PC advanced to the semifinal round by winning two earlier conference tournament games. The Friars defeated Louisville, 2-0, on October 25 at Glay Field in opening-round action. They then traveled to Cincinnati and shocked the 15th-ranked Bearcats, 2-0, in a quarterfinal-round contest.
Cross country teams claim titles
The Friars’ men’s and women’s cross country teams will be competing in the NCAA Eastern Regional Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y., on Saturday, November 11. The women are ranked 10th nationally and the men 12th.
Led by individual champion Martin Fagan ’07 (Mullingar, Ireland), who set a course record, PC’s men’s team won its 15th BIG EAST Cross Country Championship and first since 2000 on October 27 in Boston, Mass. The Friars’ women’s team also won the BIG EAST Championship that day in Boston, with graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) leading the way with a second-place finish.
The dual championships marked the third time in school history that PC has won the men’s and women’s BIG EAST Cross Country Championship. The Friars swept the conference meet in 1995 and 1996.
