Dr. Charles G. O’Connell, M.D. ’56, who died in May at age 72, left behind a remarkable legacy born of his immense devotion to both his work and to his alma mater.
During 36 years as a Connecticut obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. O’Connell brought into the world more than 6,000 children. For PC, he was a tireless volunteer and fundraiser. With the establishment of the Dr. Charles G. O’Connell ’56 Scholarship Fund, his generosity continues.
The endowed scholarship fund will assist students planning to pursue a career in medicine. The first grants will be awarded during the 2008-09 academic year.
The scholarship fund represents proceeds from Dr. O’Connell’s life insurance policy, said Joseph P. Brum ’68, special assistant to the president for development projects in the Office of Institutional Advancement.
Born in Pawtucket, R.I., in 1935, Dr. O’Connell earned his medical degree in Ireland at University College Cork in Cork. He is fondly remembered for his compassion and concern for his patients. Early in his career, he set up a free clinic for low-income women in Rockville, Conn.
A lifelong fan of Friars basketball, Dr. O’Connell attended every home game from the mid-1980s to 2005. He was just as devoted to PC in his volunteer work. During the 50 years following his graduation from Providence, he was:
• president, vice president, and a board member of the alumni association;
• an officer of the Hartford Area Alumni Club;
• co-chair of the Class of 1956 reunion giving;
• chair of the Annual Fund special gift club;
• a member of the "Providence 2000" capital campaign committee;
• one of the original members of the Friar Front Court Club;
• a member of the PC Doctors Guild; and
• founder of the Rev. Charles Reichart Scholarship Fund for biology majors.
"Charlie O’Connell was one of the most loyal and thoughtful alumni leaders I have had the privilege to be associated with in my 37 years at PC," said Brum. "He was a generous benefactor and a wonderful advocate for his alma mater. His exceptional grace and style were matched only by his kindness and humility."
