Father Morris to be honored during multicultural alumni reunion

The focal point of Multicultural Reunion Weekend, scheduled for September 29 through October 1, will be a dinner-dance on Saturday, September 30, in Peterson Recreation Center. The dinner-dance will celebrate the contributions of Rev. Robert A. Morris, O.P. ’44 in his role as a founder of the College’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund.

Former PC basketball coach and athletic director Dave Gavitt ’89Hon. will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event. The College community is invited to the dinner-dance and the reunion itself.

“Father Morris has played an integral role in shaping the diversity of the campus for over 30 years and, more importantly, enabling thousands of multicultural students to attend Providence College,” said College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80.

Father Morris is a former executive vice president of the College who occasionally serves as a special lecturer in theology.

In conjunction with the tribute, the reunion committee is attempting to raise $50,000 towards endowing the Rev. Robert A. Morris, O.P. Scholarship Fund. The fund will benefit financially needy graduates of Regis High School (Father Morris' alma mater) or another Catholic high school in New York City. To make a contribution in his honor, go to www.givetopc.org, select Endowed Scholarship, and type in Fr. Morris in the Comments section.

Sponsored by the Providence College Alumni Association’s Black Alumni Committee, Multicultural Reunion Weekend has the theme “Bringing the Family Home.” Events will kick off on Friday evening in Slavin Center ’64 Hall with a “get reacquainted” reception. Other highlights will be a show featuring comedian Jonathon Gates, a barbecue with live music, a reunion Mass, and a “Gospel Brunch.”
