Helen F. Moroney’s generosity to Providence College knows no bounds.
Earlier this spring, the longtime PC benefactor donated $50,000 to establish an endowed scholarship in honor of her late husband, John W. Moroney ’27, who taught business at PC for 35 years. It is called the John W. and Helen F. Moroney Scholarship Fund and will benefit students with financial need and academic merit who major in one of the business disciplines.
Now, she has donated the same amount to establish a second endowed scholarship fund dedicated to her three late brothers and to her two nephews, all of whom graduated from the College. The fund will be awarded to students who display academic merit and financial need, with a preference for residents from the Burrillville area of Rhode Island.
“I had a scholarship for my husband and myself, so I thought I should have one for my brothers and nephews,” said Mrs. Moroney, who owns Echo Lake Campground in Burrillville. “PC was important to the whole family.”
The James, John and Edward Fairbrother Scholarship Fund is established in memory of James G. Fairbrother ’35, John H. Fairbrother Jr. ’37, and Edward F. Fairbrother ’49, plus Edward’s sons, Peter W. Fairbrother ’81 and John Fairbrother ’94.
James was a teacher at Burrillville High School. John was an executive with Litton Industries and lived in West Hartford, Conn., while Edward was an FBI agent and lived in Acton, Mass. Peter, who lives in Acton, is U.S. tax manager for Progress Software Corporation, which is headquartered in Bedford, Mass. His brother, John Jr., lives in Foster, R.I.
“This scholarship is another example of Helen’s ongoing generous support for the College,” said Joseph P. Brum ’68, special assistant to the president for development projects. “She’s been a great friend and benefactor. It’s an honor and a privilege to now remember two branches of her family with scholarships, thanks to her generosity.”
