Dominican priests remembered by sister through new scholarships

Rev. John P. Kenny, O.P. Rev. Bernard D. Kenny, O.P.

Veronica Kenny Farrell of Rumford, R.I., the sister of two deceased Providence College Dominican priests who were PC graduates, has established endowed scholarships in honor of her brothers. Each scholarship will be awarded to students with financial need.

The Rev. John P. Kenny, O.P. Scholarship will benefit students who major in philosophy, while the Rev. Bernard D. Kenny, O.P. Scholarship will assist students who are Eagle Scouts.

In 2004, Farrell established the Howard J. Farrell Scholarship in honor of her late husband, who graduated from PC in 1924.

Farrell has made an initial donation to the scholarship funds designated for her brothers and intends to contribute additional gifts until they reach $50,000, said Joseph P. Brum ’68, special assistant to the president for development projects. Once a scholarship fund reaches the endowment minimum of $50,000, sufficient income can be earned from investing it to support the fund thereafter, he explained.

“The Kennys and the Farrells have both been generous to PC . . . and not only with their financial support, but through their involvement with the College,” said Brum.

Father John Kenny ’31 was ordained in 1938 and taught philosophy at a number of colleges before his assignment to PC in 1950. In 1952, he was named chairman of the Department of Philosophy—a position he retained for 28 years. He retired in 1986 after 46 years of teaching. Father John died on January 31, 1992.

Always active beyond the classroom, Father John was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the National Catholic Education Association. In 1978, he was appointed national chaplain of the PC Alumni Association.

Father Bernard Kenny ’38 was ordained in 1945. He was a member of the Dominican Community of St. Thomas Aquinas Priory at PC for nearly 30 years before his death on December 11, 1995.

Father Bernard, who oversaw the College's Tutorial Center, was also involved in parish and retreat work. He was active in a number of groups and programs in the Diocese of Providence but was especially committed to the Boy Scouts of America and other youth organizations. He served as chaplain at two national Boy Scout Jamborees and was an advisor to the Explorer program for young men interested in the priesthood.
