President, students to thank scholarship benefactors

On Sunday, April 23, students who are recipients of scholarship grants will join College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 in thanking their benefactors for their generosity at a special brunch in Slavin Center ’64 Hall.

Commencing at 11:00 a.m., the annual Endowed Scholarship Brunch is an invitation-only event. It is intended to provide an opportunity for scholarship grant recipients to meet their donors and to afford the College—in this case, Father Shanley—the opportunity to formally thank and honor donors and representatives of endowed funds for their contributions to Providence College.

In the current academic year, more than half of the $58 million PC is providing in financial assistance to students is funded directly by the College, with 81% of the financial aid budget drawn from operating income. The balance is funded from restricted endowments and other fundraising efforts.

“With their ongoing support of Providence College and its current students, donors are endowing the future of this great institution and the leaders of tomorrow,” said Erin Cunningham, assistant director of stewardship in the Office of Institutional Advancement.

The College currently meets approximately 80% of its students’ financial needs, compared to many competing institutions that meet nearly 100% of their students’ financial needs, said Cunningham. It is for this reason, she noted, that Father Shanley has made raising funds for need-based scholarships one of his greatest priorities.

“I sincerely hope that I can count on all alumni and friends to join the ranks of (our) scholarship fund benefactors,” said Father Shanley, “and (for them to) similarly respond with generosity and grace, so that Providence College can fulfill its promise to provide a transformative learning and living experience for our students.”
