Three alumni from classes in the 1970s and two student-athletes who are members of the Class of 2006 will be honored at the annual Mal Brown Club Awards Night on Thursday, April 27, in the Smith Center for the Arts.
The evening will begin with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception at 6:00 p.m. in the Smith Center lobby. The awards presentation will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Ryan Family Concert Hall. The program is sponsored by the Mal Brown Club, the Greater Providence chapter of the College’s Alumni Association.
The Mal Brown Award, which is the club’s highest accolade, will be given this year to Paul M. Lenahan ’72 of North Attleboro, Mass., for his example of love and loyalty to Providence College mirroring the same characteristics of the late Mal Brown. Lenahan is senior vice president of Bank of America in Providence and a member of the College’s President’s Council.
The Very Reverend Vincent C. Dore, O.P Award will be presented to Richard F. Kless ’74, ’78G, & ’82SCE of Smithfield, R.I., who is the director of off-campus living at PC. The award honors a member of the College community whose contributions to the school through the years have been manifold yet who remains unpretentious in his service.
Eva Weston Irby ’75 of Providence, R.I., a receptionist with the Waters Corporation in Milford, Mass., will receive the Dr. William P. McDonnell Award, which recognizes an individual who has given unselfishly of his or herself to further the cause of Providence College.
Derek Nobrega ’06 of Cumberland, R.I., and Karen Thatcher ’06 of Douglas, Mass., will receive the Joseph V. MacAndrew Award and the Helen Bert Award, respectively. These awards are presented to the male and female senior student-athletes who have achieved excellence in academics and athletics throughout their undergraduate career. Nobrega, a biology major, is a member of the men’s soccer team. Thatcher, who is also a biology major, is a member of the women’s ice hockey team.
