Five distinguished members of the College community will be honored by the Greater Providence Chapter of the Providence College National Alumni Association, the Mal Brown Club, at its annual Alumni Awards Reception on Thursday, March 27, in the Smith Center for the Arts on campus.
This year’s awards recipients are David J. Syner, C.P.A. ’71 of Cranston, R.I.; Mark Gasbarro ’97 of Providence, R.I.; Rosalind Y. Chua, longtime PC professor of music; and student-athletes Tyler A. Sims ’08 of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Kiley Morgart ’08 of Mountaintop, Pa.
Syner, a principal and certified public accountant with Sullivan & Company in Providence, will receive the club’s highest accolade, the Mal Brown Award. He was president of the National Alumni Association’s Board of Governors in 2004-05 and immediate past president in 2005-06.
Gasbarro, president of Gasbarro Bros. Inc. in Providence, will receive the Dr. William A. McDonnell Award. Chua, of Bristol, R.I., who is retiring in June after a 31-year teaching career at PC, will receive The Very Rev. Vincent C. Dore, O.P. Award.
The varsity student-athletes will be honored for their outstanding academic and athletic records. Sims, an economics major and goaltender for the men’s ice hockey team, will receive the Joseph V. MacAndrew Award, while Morgart, a social work major and a midfielder on the women’s field hockey team, will receive the Helen Bert Award.
The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Smith Center’s Rev. Gilbert Graham, O.P. Lobby. It will be followed by the awards presentation in the Ryan Family Concert Hall from 6:45 to 8:00 p.m. Dessert will be offered in the Graham Lobby after the awards ceremony.
Tickets for the event are $45 per person. All proceeds will benefit the Mal Brown Club Scholarship Fund, which assists students with unmet financial needs who reside in Greater Providence.
