Led by four student-athletes in indoor track who have qualified for the NCAA Championship, several Providence College winter sports teams are gearing up for post-season competition.
• Two members of both the women’s and men’s indoor track teams have qualified for the NCAA Division I Championship on March 10-11 in Fayetteville, Ark. Mary Cullen ’06 (Sligo, Ireland) tops the list on the women’s side, qualifying in the mile, the 3,000-meter run, and the 5,000. Meghan Owen ’07 (Danielson, Conn.), meanwhile, has qualified in the mile. On the men’s side, Martin Fagan ’06 (Mullingar, Ireland) has qualified for the NCAA meet in the 3,000, while Max Smith ’08 (Dunedin, New Zealand) has made it to the NCAAs in the mile and the 3,000.
• The women’s ice hockey team, which is the defending three-time HOCKEY EAST Tournament champion, has advanced to this year’s tournament. The Friars finished the regular season with a 17-13-4 record, including 11-8-2 in HOCKEY EAST play. PC, which finished third in conference action, will meet second-seeded Boston College on Saturday, March 4, in the tournament semifinals at Northeastern University’s Matthews Arena in Boston, Mass.
The winner will play the winner of the other semifinal game between New Hampshire and Maine in the championship contest on Sunday, March 5, at Matthews Arena. The HOCKEY EAST champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament.
• PC’s men’s ice hockey team has clinched a berth in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament. The Friars had an overall record of 16-13-3, including 13-9-3 in conference play, heading into the final weekend of the regular season on March 3-4, when they were scheduled to face Merrimack twice. Quarterfinal series action in the HOCKEY EAST Tournament is scheduled to begin at campus sites on Thursday, March 9.
Winners of each best-of-three quarterfinal series will advance to the tournament semifinals on Friday, March 17, at TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, Mass. The championship is scheduled the next night at the same location, with the winner automatically advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
• Heading into its final regular-season game at Marquette on Saturday, March 4, the Friars' men's basketball team has a chance to qualify for the postseason BIG EAST Tournament that opens on March 8. There are a variety of scenerios under which the Friars could qualify. PC is 12-14 overall and 5-10 in the BIG EAST.
