Athletics report highlights second meeting of Boston President’s Council

Robert G. Driscoll, Jr., associate vice president for athletics and athletic director, the featured presenter, left, is joined at the recent Boston President’s Council meeting by College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80 and Michael Joyce ’84, council chair.

In a wide-ranging report, Robert G. Driscoll, Jr., associate vice president for athletics and athletic director, updated members of the Boston President’s Council on the state of athletics at PC during the council’s recent meeting in Boston.

The January 18 gathering was the second meeting of the council in its inaugural year of operation. Modeled after the Providence-based President’s Council, the 30-member Boston council is an advisory board for the president and his administration. It assists the College in various capacities, including marketing efforts.

Driscoll opened his remarks by expressing excitement over the new 23,000-square-foot fitness center being constructed on campus. In addition to the training and exercise benefits for student-athletes and the rest of the College community, the fitness center will provide a new space to host events with its three-story atrium, he said.

Driscoll showed a video marketing the May 12, 2007, gala celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Friars’ 1987 NCAA Final Four men’s basketball team. He also reiterated that the Department of Athletics’ primary objectives are to be one of the country’s most respected programs, to achieve a 100 percent graduation rate, and to compete in championships.

Driscoll told council members he wants to make PC a “destination” for coaches and not a stepping stone to other positions; that it is important to the College and his department that the basketball program be successful; and that PC’s membership in the BIG EAST Conference is vital from branding and financial standpoints. He also mentioned recent improvements at Schneider Arena and the $62 million renovation project under way at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, where the men’s basketball team plays.

Following Driscoll’s remarks, council members listened to program overviews from Ray Treacy ’80, head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track teams, and Chaka Daley ’96, head men’s soccer coach.

The meeting began with a prayer by College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. ’80. In addition to Driscoll, presentations were made by Edward J. Caron ’70, vice president for college relations and planning, and David C. Wegrzyn, vice president for institutional advancement. Caron discussed various marketing initiatives, including the fitness center. Wegrzyn’s presentation centered on development efforts, including the Annual Fund.
