Former Friar women’s ice hockey great Cammi Granato ’93 has posted a “hat trick” without even shooting a puck into a net.
In the span of several weeks late in 2007, Granato:
• became the first woman voted into the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Hall of Fame;
• received the Lester Patrick Award, which is presented annually by the NHL and USA Hockey in “recognition of outstanding service to hockey in the United States”; and
• was selected for induction into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies will be held on Saturday, February 16, during Homecoming Weekend.
Granato was a member of the U.S. Women’s National Team for 15 years, commencing in 1990. She is the program’s all-time scoring leader with 343 points, including 186 goals, in 205 games. She played in every IIHF world women’s championship during that period.
A native of Downers Grove, Ill., Granato served as the captain of the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the 1998 Winter Olympic Games in Nagano, Japan. The U.S. beat Canada, 3-1, in the finals that year, which was the first year women’s hockey was recognized as an official Olympic sport. Later, Granato was named to carry the U.S. flag at the Games’ closing ceremonies.
Granato also played and served as captain on the 2002 U.S. Olympic Team that earned the silver medal at the Winter Games in Salt Lake City.
In 1996, Granato was named USA Hockey Player of the Year, and in both 1992 and 1997 she was voted to the World Championship All-Tournament Team.
While playing for the Friars, Granato led PC to two ECAC Championships. She was voted ECAC Player of the Year three consecutive seasons and was an ECAC All-Star for each of her four seasons at Providence.
Granato holds the school record for most points (84), goals (48) and assists (43) in a single season. She also holds the PC record for most goals in a career (139) and is second on the all-time assist list (117).
